Here’s an awesome synopsis from My Anime List:
On her first date with the cutest boy in school, Ichigo is zapped by a mysterious ray that scrambles her DNA with that of the endangered Iriomote wildcat. The next day, Ichigo discovers that she has developed the agility (and occasionally the ears and tail) of a cat, as well as the power to transform into a pink-haired superheroine, Mew Ichigo. She and four other girls, each endowed with the genes of a different “Red Data” animal, have been selected for the top-secret Mew Project, which aims to protect the Earth from an alien menace known as Deep Blue.
Sounds like an alien-filled supernatural anime doesn’t it? Well, it’s not. It’s just plain mahou shoujo.
But this anime has got lots of good things many mahou shoujo series do not.
First of all, Ichigo is not the typical ditzy, whiny heroine with jaw dropping bad grades (except the score ‘0’ is not so jaw dropping anymore because we’ve seen it go hand in hand with countless heroines now, haven’t we? XD). She gains DNA of the endangered mountain cat, enabling her to have the agility and strength of that cat, which hardly makes her clumsy or stupid. But of course, the cat in her makes her not much of a morning person. With a craving for fish. XD
Anyway, this anime was enjoyable. Great plotlines, great characters, and romance (always a plus ;) ). Here’s a proper review:
As I said before, great plotlines, great characters, and romance. Ichigo is a great heroine, and she has great friends. The Mew Mew recruitments got a tiny bit repetitive but Zakuro’s recruit was so interesting to watch. The battles aren’t terrible. The animal twist in each character is entertaining. What could go wrong?
Well, I’ve watched this anime twice and loved it very much but the romance was lacking. I mean, every shoujo reader/watcher knows that the heroine never ends up with her perfect crush, her sweet prince daydream. Yet, in this anime, she does. Some might find this refreshing but some (like me) find this really disappointing. I liked her relationship with Ryou, I thought it was interesting. But then the anime went ahead and disappointed me by fixing LETTUCE with Ryou, which is absolutely ridiculous.
I guess I’m making a big deal out of it, but romance is a really important part of anime and manga so when it’s badly done, it just makes me angry. But everything else was great. A really good anime. The romance was disappointing, especially for hardcore shoujo fans who always analyze romance and plot. If you’re not like us hardcore shoujo fans who predict and analyze and ship like crazy, then this anime’s romance won’t give you a hard time at all.
Great art. ^__^ No problem there!
GREAT characters. I love all the characters, especially Zakuro, Ichigo and Mint. Not the most typical characters, but they all have clear types that are often shown in anime and manga.
I watched this anime twice (both seasons) and loved it! Great anime to watch. The battles don’t get repetitive and the characters are great. There are some very entertaining episodes, and some others that aren’t as entertaining but really worth watching.
